Requiring help with my old Nexus 4
« on: 08 11, 2017, 08:16:55 am »
Hey there,

I used a Nexus 4 3 years back, it got bricked/stuck on boot loop after a failed OTA Update. I kept that phone  away for a while since I was a apple fanboy at that time and only knew how to fix Apple Problems and flashing Android was kinda difficult for me or I simply didn't understand it to be precise. I didn't want to mess it up even more and put it safely.

I just found it yesterday during cleaning and tried to flash it with a new ROM since by now I have learnt how to flash Custom ROM's using my Galaxy Grand Neo. But I had this weird problem that every other Nexus 4 user had; The Red light of Death.

This Red light of Death came once before and I fixed by charging it for 5 hours. Since I didn't charge this for 4 years, it's battery along with its backup power completely drained out, I put it on charge for 30 minutes and I soon got the Battery Charging symbol.

This is where the problem began, the phone started to show the battery charging symbol for a minute then it disappears and then again after a minute it reappears. I was able to use the fast boot options and tried to put it in recovery mode, only for it to send me back to the *google* bootlogo and then it turned off again and repeated the cycle without a reason. I kept it charged for 10 hours or more and now the light is blinking and doesn't allow me to access the fastboot either but the Charging symbol still appears randomly and disappears randomly..

Has anyone of you owned a Nexus 4 before ? if so, can you please help me out in this situation ? The phone is absolute beauty with a curved screen and a glossy back, I don't really want to give up on it this fast since it shows some signs of life rather than a completely dead phone.

Either the battery has become faulty, or you need to directly put some charge to it, in both cases you have to disassemble the phone. Considering the age of this device and how much time it was left unused it could be and other hardware malfuction, but for me the main suspect is the battery.
This is just a hypothesis tho', as I don't have direct view to the phone, I cant really be  sure what's the problem.
Best thing to do is to find specialist.

Well now that you mention, I do suspect the battery since it's able to power up the phone but thats all, it doesn't stay up and i've left it charging for two days, i've noticed that its able to use the power from the outlet for a time and when I do something like put it on Download Mode or just bootloader, it instantly switches to the battery power and causes a restart putting me back into the Red light.

Well thats my problem, there ain't no nexus specialists here. Looks like I have to deal this on my own, I don't even have the phillips head to unscrew the case.

I was talking about the service to do the dirty job, anyway I found your wrongs. In order for the phone to charge, the kernel module responsible for it should be loaded, yet this is something which happens after passing the bootloader(simply said the phone does not charge when it is in bootloader). Connect it to the charger and leave it loop at the Google logo for a while, and at some point it should load the system if everything else is alright. @Roman.

Well there's no service dudes here, at least for the Nexus.

Unfortunately I didn't do anything wrong, the red light keeps blinking and blinking no google logo or anything. I told that I was only able to put the phone in Bootloader mode, where none of the options such as Start or Recovery puts me on the google logo for a second before my screen fades and I get the red blinking again and again.

Ehh, sorry for the double post but a mod should lock this.

Fixed it, the fault was in the battery being dead after not being charged for 3 years. Fixed it and the Nexus booted up normally, used NRT and flashed it to 5.1. Its working flawlessly now, thanks for your help sasheto.
