Title: Server Migration
Post by: Arran on 30 11, 2020, 07:30:08 pm
For the past week I have been preparing a new server to replace the current server, mainly for the reason that the operating system is outdated. Although the hardware is better, this likely won't make any difference to performance as the current servers performance is already higher than the demand. However the new operating system (Windows Server 2019) recently had an update where they redesigned UDP, which is a data transfer protocol used by games which I've been told makes a noticeable improvement, like a latency reduction.

I don't know when exactly I'll finalize the migration, which although is a complex task, may only result in 15 minutes of downtime as was achieved in the past, but things can go wrong and it could take much longer, so if you see the server / forum is offline don't worry. I will announce it in-game and here just before I begin the finalization process.

Does that mean that there will be an improvement to the combat system along with the improved UDP protocol?

Good to hear. Improvements are always great, especially in the netcode and synchronization department. Nothing needs these improvements more than the MTA community.

Maybe if it’s enough of an improvement, we can remove Brian’s broken dynamic damage per ping “feature”, and many players would return to play like we used to.

Pings might be slightly less because of it, by how much or if at all, I've no idea.

Also the server location is changing slightly, 475 km South West. The new server is near Strasbourg so for anyone East / South of France will have a slightly lower ping as the current server is around Gravelines which is in-between Dunkirk (well known for the WW2 fighting that took place there) and Calais (which is well known for the migrant camps of people trying to sneak over to England).

How long will it take you to improve it, and the PING - FPS of the players will be fine, right

FPS is the result of your hardware capability to handle the game's load, in short it's about your PC.
Ping is related to connection to server, which will probably improve according to Arran, possibly resulting in less ping for everyone.

I will do the migration tomorrow.

I mean if the latency reduction improves the desync issues MTA has. No idea if the question is stupid I am just wondering.

The migration will be starting soon.

I migrated the important files like the databases in less than 15 minutes. But OVH's failover IP switching being shit totally fucked that up and as I have no idea how long they'll take to fix it I've just ordered a new IP for the new server. If you can't see it on the server browser connect manually to 151.80.111.188

You can do "connect 151.80.111.188" in the console or put 151.80.111.188 into the server browser address bar and press enter.

Strassbourg? It'll actually increase latency for many players.
Ping for Dutch players will be almost double. Dunno for other players, but my experience say they'll get a slightly higher latency.

Someone on scoreboard with NL right now showing 25 to 44.

We usually have 10-15 ms.

There are a few countries that actually have an advantage.

I'll check later today if most of the player base (TR, EG, TN etc) have same or lower ping.

I have also completely re-installed MTA, but the problem still persists.

Download and replace Engine Parts.png (https://i.imgur.com/MqUTnYr.png)

Send a message to me on Discord for the correct sound file. Nuko#2770. (Don't have mediafire).

Replace those 2 files in the folders and you should be ready to join.

Edit: You can now downloaded both of these files thanks to Pilovali:

Trying to fix it right now. Seems to be an MTA internal web server bug. The only solution is to use the external HTTP server again. Which requires a server restart and some reconfiguration which I can hopefully just do when they fix the old IPs.

Or someone can give you those files that for some reason the internal web server can't send even though I've tried deleting them from the cache and restarting the scripts. The files in the cache are fine it's MTA's internal web server is apparently old buggy crap.

Had to shut MTA down to restore all the database tables due to server host being incompetent and shutting our server down (cutting the power so data loss occurs) will be online in a few mins but then they'll probably fucking mess it up again. :fp:

I think there's a problem with triple xp events for jobs. Progress is still the same. Can you check it?

The old IPs finally work. I will keep the double pay on for a few more days.
