Title: CIT Folding Competition + Group
Post by: Arran on 09 04, 2013, 08:35:04 pm
Even While You Sleep ... You Are Very Busy, Folding (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sJx9z1uB9k#ws)

CIT is an online gaming community but that doesn't stop us from getting involved in more than just gaming. We can advance medical science and save lives, by doing almost nothing. So today I have decided to form a group on folding at home for the CIT community and to make things more interesting I'm going to give:

1000 hours of VIP to the top 10 folders
500 hours of VIP to the next top 15 folders
250 hours of VIP to the next top 25 folders

After one month of computing. So the top 50 will get something, a combined total of £237 worth of VIP will be available and even if you don't make the top 50, you're saving somebodies life.

1. Go here: http://folding.stanford.edu/ (http://folding.stanford.edu/)
2. Click "START FOLDING"
3. Download and install the installer
4. Go here: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py (http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py)
5. In the "Donor name" box put CIT_yourIngameAccountNameHere so for example if your ingame account name (NOT player name) was Arran then put CIT_Arran (case sensitive too) if you do this wrong you won't get any VIP if you make it to top 50.
6. Put in an email address that you can access.
7. Open the email they send you and copy the passkey.
8. If folding@home is installed and open there should be a new icon bottom right of your screen, right click on it and click "Web Control"
9. Click "Identity" at the top of the website and enter your name (the donor name you picked in step 5) your passkey and in team put: 224321
10. You're done, have a look round the software.

My percentage was stuck on 0.00% until it reached 1% then it started updating every 0.01% and depending on the project you're assigned to it will take hours and days to complete and the more computations it does the more points you'll get.

The home page of our group is here: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=224321 (http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=224321) and you can view the top folders there.

To get your GPU to do computing also you need to set the folding power to full, but if you're gaming you'll probably lag a lot from it so will need to lower it when gaming.

And, will having a better internet connection increase your folding speed?

Looks interesting. I hope I'm doing it well... If we can save lives like this, I'm really proud to do this. I downloaded the program, I'm trying to understand how it works.

Edit: We've to keep the software in our PC's because is needed or it's temporary? It doesn't bother me to keep it.

Simply by running this software you are helping scientists study Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and many cancers.

You are also participating in the world's most powerful distributed super-computer.

People like you, all over the globe, are putting their unused computer time to good use.

Scientists at Stanford University and around the world utilize your donated computer time to better understand and develop cures for some of humanity's worst diseases.

When proteins do not fold correctly, also known as misfolding, there can be serious health consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many cancers.

If we better understand protein misfolding we can design drugs and therapies to combat these illnesses.

Im using laptop and put it on full. According to windows task manager my CPU usage is from 50-60% not 100% as many are claiming, my fan is moving quite fast, would it still be OK, its time my laptop had some exercise.

I freak out too.
My fan is spinning like shit, but my computer is not that much over the regular heat, so I think it should be fine.

and every time I get to around 6-7%, the thing sets back to around 4%... Why?

You shouldn't really use it with a laptop since it will overheat and drain battery if it isn't plugged in.

Your device shouldn't be damaged/set on fire/etc from 100% usage constantly unless it's full of dust or blocked/broken/etc fans but even then any decent computer will shut down if it gets too hot.

This program using GPU?

Edit:Your CPU or GPU may become hot you can check with this programs
CPU checker:http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html)
GPU checker:http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ (http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/)

You must be careful if the temperature exceeds the degree of.

max temperature for GPU: 70~80
max temperature for CPU:70

(I did not say to each hardware, depends your cpu and gpu)

This program using GPU?

It does only with CUDA cores and OpenCL so your GPU does need to meet some requirements.
Here is a windows guide for the program:  Click  (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinGuide)
Here is ATI gpu list:  Click  (http://developer.amd.com/tools/heterogeneous-computing/amd-accelerated-parallel-processing-app-sdk/system-requirements-driver-compatibility/#requirements)
Here is nVidia gpu list:  Click (https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-gpus)

(http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/6401/screenshot2vd.th.jpg) (http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/6401/screenshot2vd.jpg)
As you can see on the screen if your GPU is compatible with the software its shown on job list.
Also number next to CPU is a number of threads locked for job, so you can freely adjust how many cores/threads can be used to make your work at the pc good enough.

Generally if any laptop has compatible GPU with the software, putting slider to medium is good enough to prevent overheating, those without ATI and nVidia cards should do well even on MAX, but OS is getting to lazy to do anything else so playing with folding power slider can save the day.

This program using GPU?

If u set it to do so.. and you have a compatible graphic card like nvidia with cuda´s ,i for example have 2 evga gtx670 FTW, so I can use them and take advantage of all cuda´s processors,
but its very intensive to use gpu processing though if you have dd5 memory graphic cards and a good clock frequency its very very fast...
About the cpu ,its ok to them to work at 100% for hours and days if they have good cooling and no dust.
I had to remove my overclock to fold so I can do it for weeks without reaching overheating.

Every little helps still be aware that if you have installed it with "express install" or choose autostart with "custom install" program will start again after you will start your PC at other time. If you feel you can keep it for days with Light settings or even Idle and you wont even notice it working in background.

Probably your progress is being send to the server or something, if it takes too long restart the program/PC  it should start from last progress.

I'm doing it! Great way of helping ! Btw, if I use 2 PC's and I enter the same account name it's that a problem? Or?..  How I should do ?

No, actually its workings in parallel calculations, your other PC will be assigned to other job so you can gain higher score this way. From Folding@home point of view its good, not sure about the rules of this competition for CIT.

Well that's really a nice thing if all of us can help someone as a group. Also, If we are two brothers then? Currently its about 5% for my brother but if I also wanna do this thing then I must wait for my brother's to get completed right?

Also, If we get disconnected then? I saw it was continued so it means that if we do it in 2 days (As it is saying 2 days left for 100%) it will be added in one turn?

Last thing, What is PPD? is that the point where we get ranking in our homepage right? And what is WU? And whats the use of GPU? Why should we turn it on? Will it be proved more helpful to people?

Thats all thanx.

PPD is the amount of points you get when you complete the task its given

About the gpu read this and understand how everything works:
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-highperformance (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-highperformance)

Turned everything off, only have the program running and so far so great! Let's make a change to this world, shall we :)?

Folding@Home at Full over here and only 38% CPU usage  ???

Try putting the laptop (if you use a laptop ofcourse) in energy saving mode/power eco mode. It works for me :P

Wait mine did the same thing... Is that wrong then? And I only have one that says CPU:2, lol... Am I blonde or what xD
By the way, read your e-mails dude, 5k+ emails  :o ;)

People that are having issues : download latest java http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp (http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp) then activate the account with the serial provided in you email.
Guys Gpu is not same has CPU , you have your processor working on a task and your Graphic card processor working on another task , so you will have the 2x points and help 2x more.

I have the latest Java. And I know GPU ain't the same as CPU. I already activated my account with my serial. We were just wondering why it went straight to Identification. But that's normal, it's supposed to ;)
Thanks for your concern anyways.

The problem is that I get:" Frame timer error" in the advance control log. My status is :"Ready" not "Running"

Are you trying to use gpu processing or just normal?
Can you provide a screenshot with error??

Edit try this from  their support forum:
Were you able to look at the running processes in Task Manager? I seem to recall (at some point in the distant past) finding an orphaned FAHClient process running after executing 'Quit' from FAHControl (when FAHClient was started by FAHControl). Try doing that (executing 'Quit' from FAHControl) and seeing if a rogue FAHClient process is still running. Perhaps it (FAHClient) somehow failed to trap a signal intended to shut it down. I used the Task Manager 'End Process' button to kill the rogue FAHClient.

You need to create new donor name and you will receive new passkey on email, so next you change name and passkey in identity tab on web control. If there is any problems with that, you can always reinstall it and put new identity data there.

It will depend on your hardware , do you have compatible gpu processing ? are u in a desktop?
Going high with graphic card processing its advise to use a program to increase the fan profile.(this is only if it uses your gpu)
Going medium its reasonable to any computer made in the last 10 years.
Cpu processing its nothing to be worried if since it will auto shutdown if it reaches high temps.
If you wanna test it, download a program called CORE TEMP then go check your max cpu temps in the manufacturer website or google it, use the folding during 1 hour and check if temp goes above the recommended to your cpu.(if it does then you may have dust, because cpu´s are build to work @ 100% for long periods of time)

Like what Chulo said, so if your computer/Laptop shuts down the process is paused.

1 Question: Do you have to wait until is it 100% to know if your in the CIT tops list (http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=224321) ?

Yes you have to wait till u get 100% so you get yours points and then if its enough points for going to top 10 you will appear when they refresh the database wich can take 4-5 hours anyway it says when it was updated last time in the top pages.

Nah its really no problem at all its just written there but I tried it it dosn't made my fan to spin more faster or to make my PC over heat because its not a Graphics or Computer's speed consuming it just needs a good network speed. Afaik both have same speed Medium=High.

Considering there are only 23 people listed on the folding page so far it means that either hardly anybody is interested or they just haven't been added to the list yet. If there are only 23 people actually folding, then it means anybody who enters and folds just a bit will win.

The distributed computer idea has been in use for awhile, but I never signed up for it before today.

I think this is a great direction for CIT - promoting the interests of the community (including the CIT community).  It fits my idea of finding real world benefits relating to the use of multi-player platform.  Good job Arran.  I'm sure there are many other opportunities out there!

I'll be getting all my pc's fired up and computing : )

It doesn't mean you are bugged, some projects are huge not all get the same one.
There is a time limit for completion the project tho, look over Technical details and you will see how much time you have to complete it and how much points you will get.

I've already put some tips about folding on other topic  to not spam this one:
http://cit2.net/index.php?topic=70519.0 (http://cit2.net/index.php?topic=70519.0)

Well I'm not sure was the VIP give-out good idea, but its Arrans call what to do with it.
For sure longer projects will drop more points but because projects are not given out fairly and maybe some could even take over a weak its hard to decide fairly who deserve the reward and who doesn't.

Considering there are only 23 people listed on the folding page so far it means that either hardly anybody is interested or they just haven't been added to the list yet. If there are only 23 people actually folding, then it means anybody who enters and folds just a bit will win.

Well in my openion everyone is interested but it takes much time to complete so thats why our name isn't in the list and I know there will be +100 players who tried to help.

Another thing should I select a disease or leave it as it is?

Your progress is periodically saved on your PC (from what I've read its maximum 15 minutes default), so generally saying you are not gonna loose your work. Also you don't have to be connected to the internet all the time, but just before it reaches 100% so it can sent job results back.

I just completed 1 assignment but apparently I got no points :D
Stats page is refreshed in 1 hours periods, maybe its that or simply it took to long for you too finish the assignment so you are busted :P

I don't think you get it. You make an account or something in Folding@home and it folds if you just leave your PC on. It can make your electricity big if you leave your computer on while sleeping

There's something weird just happened. I though folding from more than one desktop is allowed, so I used two pc's to fold to get more points. But somehow my name is duplicated and one of them with wrong identity. It was supposed to be ( CIT_ayouty ) but one of them is just ( ayouty ) don't know how did that happen.

I'm not seeing my identity on the group stats page for CIT Team 224321.  Is this due to timing of a daily update?  I had no issues with signing up and I've verified the Team name...

I have 2 projects @ 2413 points per day, which I would like to see included on CIT stats soon :D

Added another machine - Ok 4 projects now!

Anyone running linux? Tempted to load that on a failed windows laptop...

First of all you need to finish at least 1 project in time to get any points (and be shown in stats), then after 1 hour update your name will be shown on the list.

There's something weird just happened. I though folding from more than one desktop is allowed, so I used two pc's to fold to get more points. Maybe someone else has this name or you put incorrect data before.
Check on both machines if its for sure same account names and passkeys, it doest matter whats the name if you change it after you made mistake, passkey is your real identification.

Go to Advanced Control (right click on FAH icon on taskbar)
Its estimated points for completion, it can vary depends how quick you did it.
Obviously you get those points when its 100% then you will get new project.

Be sure that you have completed the process like 100% folding progress and also you must type your account name (Ig-account name with addition of CIT_Accountname).

And if you really finished and your PPDs (Points per day were ever 1 or more then find your typed name in the list also refresh the list if you were just finished the progress.

Define overheat...
I have almost 100 degrees on my laptop, as far as you PC is working without freezes/restarts temperature is fine but long term loads are not good in general. Servers and workstations are designed for that, PC's and laptops usually aren't.

Is it 100% done 1 time? Then wait for an hour to get your name in the list.

I just got around to downloading it and starting, better late than never huh?

I will be trying to do as much Alzheimer's research as possible, I hate the disease and how it ruins your life and your loved ones. At least cancer patients remember their family.

Can any admin (Who know this very well) tell me that how it works?

I mean I did it 3 times but my total scores are 1290 1st time my total were 895 and I tried again and at last time my PPDs were like 1900 but after I completed second time my total became like 1094 and then I did again wit 2300 PPDs and after I completed it again now my total scroes in the list are 1200.

So Whats the procedure to increase them and also doing it again and again can cause to decrease my Scores too?

Please answer me I am waiting and thanks alot for your time.

FAH faq isn't very rich in description of that.
For the first time I thought score is based on value shown in FAH control but for some reason, I had lower scores then it was predicted.

PPD (points per day) is some kind of estimation of your computer power. If project would be 1 day then you should get around that score, but projects can take shorter or longer so it doesn't work that way.
As for now I'm only getting "Base Credit" for each projects but also FAQ tells that at some point you can get bonus points for each job as well (still not sure will it be "Credit" shown in FAH control or other bonus).
You can read more about it  here  (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-Points)

I like the iniciative.
Already installed it on my laptop since it's running almost 24h per day which could be great.
Does it makes a huge difference when set to full mode instead of light ?
What about my internet connection, does it use a significant ammount of my upload speed?

CIT is an online gaming community but that doesn't stop us from getting involved in more than just gaming. We can advance medical science and save lives, by doing almost nothing. So today I have decided to form a group on folding at home for the CIT community and to make things more interesting I'm going to give:

1000 hours of VIP to the top 10 folders
500 hours of VIP to the next top 15 folders
250 hours of VIP to the next top 25 folders

Any bonus VIP for reaching certain point tiers?

eg. 250,000 points    - 150 hours
      500,000 points    - 250 hours
      1,000,000 points - 500 hours

If you do that, It will give an extra incentive to everyone to produce not only to be in the top 50, but also being rewarded for reaching certain levels of points.

Everybody who was rank 50 or lower got their VIP except Livelethal, Audiophase and Baptista as those accounts don't exist.
