CIT Folding Competition + Group
« on: 09 04, 2013, 08:35:04 pm »

CIT is an online gaming community but that doesn't stop us from getting involved in more than just gaming. We can advance medical science and save lives, by doing almost nothing. So today I have decided to form a group on folding at home for the CIT community and to make things more interesting I'm going to give:

1000 hours of VIP to the top 10 folders
500 hours of VIP to the next top 15 folders
250 hours of VIP to the next top 25 folders

After one month of computing. So the top 50 will get something, a combined total of £237 worth of VIP will be available and even if you don't make the top 50, you're saving somebodies life.

1. Go here: http://folding.stanford.edu/
2. Click "START FOLDING"
3. Download and install the installer
4. Go here: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py
5. In the "Donor name" box put CIT_yourIngameAccountNameHere so for example if your ingame account name (NOT player name) was Arran then put CIT_Arran (case sensitive too) if you do this wrong you won't get any VIP if you make it to top 50.
6. Put in an email address that you can access.
7. Open the email they send you and copy the passkey.
8. If folding@home is installed and open there should be a new icon bottom right of your screen, right click on it and click "Web Control"
9. Click "Identity" at the top of the website and enter your name (the donor name you picked in step 5) your passkey and in team put: 224321
10. You're done, have a look round the software.

My percentage was stuck on 0.00% until it reached 1% then it started updating every 0.01% and depending on the project you're assigned to it will take hours and days to complete and the more computations it does the more points you'll get.

The home page of our group is here: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=224321 and you can view the top folders there.

To get your GPU to do computing also you need to set the folding power to full, but if you're gaming you'll probably lag a lot from it so will need to lower it when gaming.

I will start doing this when I get home, but I do not understand:
How does this program help?
And, will having a better internet connection increase your folding speed?

Looks interesting. I hope I'm doing it well... If we can save lives like this, I'm really proud to do this. I downloaded the program, I'm trying to understand how it works.

Edit: We've to keep the software in our PC's because is needed or it's temporary? It doesn't bother me to keep it.

Simply by running this software you are helping scientists study Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and many cancers.

You are also participating in the world's most powerful distributed super-computer.

People like you, all over the globe, are putting their unused computer time to good use.

Scientists at Stanford University and around the world utilize your donated computer time to better understand and develop cures for some of humanity's worst diseases.

When proteins do not fold correctly, also known as misfolding, there can be serious health consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many cancers.

If we better understand protein misfolding we can design drugs and therapies to combat these illnesses.

Same lol.

I'm running F@H now like 3 hours and I'm at 3.75%.

Is there a way to see my WU's?
